Speed awareness courses Frequently asked questions
What is the Speed Awareness Scheme?
The Speed Awareness Scheme (SAS) has been put in place to give offenders who drive in excess of the speed limit (not excessively) the opportunity to attend an educational workshop as an alternative to the fixed penalty system (£60 and three penalty points).
Do I have to pay for the course and what does it involve?
Yes there is a course fee which you have to pay in full to the course provider prior to the course. Payment is between you and the provider; the police do not get involved with this issue. The course should be no longer than four hours duration and in Surrey constitutes a combination of information and group discussion.
Will I be eligible for a Speed Awareness course?
If invited –yes, provided that you have not already attended another course within the last three years (or are waiting to attend one). If you have you will be issued with a conditional offer of fixed penalty.
What if I cannot attend the course that is offered?
When accepting the course you will be given the opportunity to select a date that is convenient to you according to the courses available. If you are unable to attend on the day selected you should contact the service provider who will then make a decision based on your circumstances as to whether they can offer an alternative date or refer you back to the police safety camera unit. This may incur ‘rescheduling’ fees. If you are referred back to the police safety camera unit either you will be offered a fixed penalty (£60 and three penalty points) or the matter will be dealt with at a magistrates’ court.
Can I challenge the allegation?
You have the right to have the matter dealt with at a magistrates’ court and you may complete and return the preference form to the police safety camera unit indicating that you wish the matter to be dealt with at court.
Who is running the Speed Awareness Course?
There is an approved service provider responsible to Surrey Police.
What if I have ‘special needs’?
Prior to attending the course you will be asked to provide these details to the service provider.
Do I have to take a written or driving test?
No, not in Surrey, however there will be group discussions that you will be expected to participate in to successfully complete the course. But should you elect to attend a course in another force area there may be practical driving sessions.
Where can I find information specifically about the course I will be attending?
After you have returned your preference form to us indicating that you wish to accept the offer of a Speed Awareness Course the service provider will send you all the information you require to book a course, followed by course instructions including travel directions to the venue and parking availability. They will also advise you what documents you need to take with you on the day.
