Top Tips to avoid being an anti-social driver

You can help us reduce the number of people seriously injured or killed on Surrey roads by:

  • Not driving whilst using a hand-held mobile phone. Research shows that using a mobile phone while driving means you are four times more likely to have an accident.
  • Staying within the speed limit. Speed limits are there for a reason. Research shows if you hit a child at 40mph, there’s an 80% chance they will be killed. If hit at 30mph, there’s an 80% chance they will survive.
  • Parking sensibly and without causing obstruction. Inconsiderate or dangerous parking can result in traffic jams and cause hazards for other road users and pedestrians.
  • Being a considerate driver. Tailgating and aggressive driving can be dangerous and could contribute to collisions.
  • Always ensuring you and your passengers wear a seat belt.
  • Getting involved in Community Speedwatch. These schemes, supported by Surrey Police, involve volunteers being trained to use speed detection equipment to help address speeding in their community. Contact the Surrey Police casualty reduction officer for your area on 0845 125 222 for more details.
  • Supporting School Speedwatch schemes. Schools across the county can also take part in a School Speedwatch scheme, where pupils help to detect speeding vehicles and then speak with speeding motorists to encourage them to slow down. Contact Surrey County Council’s community travel team for more details:  West Surrey – 01483 517515 / East Surrey – 020 8541 7111.
  • Reporting incidents of anti-social driving to Surrey Police. So we can use our resources well. Contact us on 0845 125 2222, email us using the form at http://www.surrey.police.uk/contact/contact_options.asp or attend your local neighbourhood panel meeting.
