Talk SMART
It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone when driving. Research shows that using a mobile phone when driving means you are four times more likely to crash.
The Talk SMART in Surrey campaign aims to educate drivers about the dangers of using a hand-held mobile at the wheel and encourages motorists to ‘Leave your phone alone when driving’.
To help get the message across the campaign, which launched in May 2010, uses online, billboard and radio advertising as well as enhanced operational activity and road show events.
For the first time, a Quick Response (QR) code has been used on leaflets and material at the road shows, which smartphone users can scan and link through to the campaign’s online adverts on this website.
Did you know?
Using a hand-held mobile phone when driving means:
- Your reaction times are slower – 30% worse than for driving under the influence of alcohol at the legal limit.
- If you text while driving, your reaction times are slowed by 35%.
- You are more likely to drift across lanes.
- Your judgement of speed and distances from other vehicles is impaired.
Using a hands-free phone is just as distracting as using a hand-held mobile while driving. You can be prosecuted for using a hands-free phone if you are not in proper control of your vehicle – the penalties are the same.
