Ride SMART
Be safe on the roads
Did you know that young moped and motorcycle riders are one of the most vulnerable groups on Surrey’s roads?
Of the 432 motorcycle casualties in Surrey in 2010 almost one quarter of them (23%) were in the 16-20 age group. Another 21% were aged between 21 and 30.
Most collisions occur between 8am and 9am and 5pm and 6pm which suggests those commuting to and from work or college are particularly at risk.
So you can see why we need to help protect this group
Our aim, through this campaign, is to warn drivers, primarily of cars, to look out for riders. Around 75% of serious and fatal injuries nationally occur in collisions involving another vehicle, usually a car. Crashes at junctions are common.
But we also want you to look out for drivers because, (as you have already probably experienced!) sometimes even though they might actually look like they’ve seen you their actions prove otherwise!
Our publicity campaign will be using social media and more conventional forms of advertising to get the message out. But we also want to point you in the right direction to make sure you are safe on Surrey’s roads and beyond.
But there’s also some practical things you can do to make you safer every time you get on your machine – head over to our Advice and Tips page for more information.
