FAQs

Why is there a renewed focus on illegal and inconsiderate parking in Surrey?

Ever increasing numbers of vehicles on Surrey's roads bring more congestion and therefore more parking issues. Illegal and inconsiderate parking causes hazards for road users and pedestrians alike. It creates unnecessary traffic jams which, in turn, add to the pollution in our towns and villages.

Inconsiderate parking can cause real problems for people who are visually impaired, wheelchair users and those with pushchairs. Inconsiderate parking can cause serious interruption to traffic flow, which then causes delays in the public transport system, and most importantly, prevents emergency vehicles attending incidents.

What are the changes to enforcement of parking across driveways and dropped kerbs?

From 16 November 2009 district and borough councils have powers to issue penalty charge notice to vehicles parked alongside dropped kerbs. Police have enforcement powers only if the vehicle is also causing an actual obstruction.

I've seen a parked vehicle on my street without any tax, who do I contact?

Contact the DVLA on 08000 325 202, or visit the DVLA website http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/. You will need to record the make, model, registration number and location of the vehicle.

What do I do if I suspect a vehicle has been abandoned?

Contact your district or borough council - tell them the make, model, registration number and location of the vehicle.
