Drive SMART

Don't drink and drive

Surrey’s Christmas campaign will be reminding motorists throughout December and well into the New Year of the devastating consequences of drinking and driving.

On average four people a month are killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads as a consequence of drink or drug-related driving – the vast majority of which is drink related.

The risk is thought to be higher in the lead up to Christmas and New Year when there is greater temptation to drink. To combat this Surrey Police will be running enhanced operational activity to curb drink driving during this period.

December 1st also marks that start of a big publicity campaign, run as part of the Drive SMART initiative, that uses a striking image to remind drivers that Drinking And Driving Shatter Lives. The campaign also encourages people who may drink while out to plan in advance.

Research by Surrey Police shows that most offenders are young males aged between 17 and 34, so a range of advertising media will be used to target this group – including bar advertising, Bluetooth messaging, text advertising and Facebook advertising. The Drinking and Driving Shatters Lives message will also be heard on radio stations across the country and seen in cinemas, on bus backs, on banners outside fire stations and on traffic signs along major routes. Thousands of posters and wallet cards will also be distributed to bars, pubs and clubs across Surrey by Surrey Fire & Rescue personnel and Surrey Police.
