Drive SMART

Drinking and driving destroys lives

Surrey’s Christmas campaign will be reminding motorists throughout December and well into the New Year of the potentially devastating consequences of drinking and driving.

On average more than three people a month are killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads as a consequence of drink or drug-related driving – the vast majority of which is drink related.

The risk is thought to be higher in the lead up to Christmas and New Year when there is greater temptation to drink. To combat this Surrey Police will be running enhanced operational activity to curb drink driving during this period.

December 1 also marks the start of a publicity campaign, run as part of the Drive SMART initiative, which reminds motorists of the potential consequences of drink driving, both for themselves and others. The campaign encourages people who may drink while out to plan their journey home in advance.

Tolerance to alcohol depends on a combination of factors including weight, age, gender, stress and recent food consumption. The best way to stay safe is not to drink and drive.
